Dough Art Angel

Classification: Easy

Dough Art Angel Materials:

  • Salt dough
  • Acrylic colors blue, yellow, flesh, black and white
  • General tools and supplies
  • Attachment accessory for a pin, ornament, magnetic, stocking holder, etc.
Shape your dough either the same size of the patterns, larger or smaller depending upon the size you desire for your project.

Simple Instructions For Body and Arms:

  • Roll two balls of white dough and shape into the wing shape with your fingers.  They can also be flattened with the rolling pin to about 1/16" and then cut with the scissors.  Make them separate and lay them in position as shown below.
  • Make a ball of light blue dough and form into a semi-bell shape for the body.  When finished, fuse the body over the wings in position.
  • Use the same light blue dough to shape the arms from two thin rolls of dough.  When the proper size is reached, use a small rounded object such as the top end of a paint brush, to make the sleeve opening on one end by pressing it into the the dough gently.
  • Fuse the arms to each side of the neck area, curving them slightly over the body as shown, barely touching at the wrist area.
Instructions For The Head, Hair and Hands:
  • Roll a ball of flesh dough for the head.  Fuse to the body, fitting over the neck and the top of the arms.
  • Use flesh dough to shape the hands from tiny balls of dough.  Use a straight pin to make the finger slits or separations.  Position them together in a praying position or apart.
  • As an option, you can use the leaf patterns to shape or cut out the leaves.
  • Use a straight pin to create the vein impressions.  Fuse the leaves wherever you wish.
  • Use the Kemper Klay Gun or garlic press to make the yellow hair by squeezing the dough to about 1." Cut with a paring or Exacto knife from the tool and use a toothpick to fuse to the head as shown.
  • Fuse the strands to the forehead for bangs and then to the sides of the head.
  • Insert you ornament hanger into the top center of the head, or a stocking holder into the bottom center of the body or gown.

Dough Art Angel Completion:
  • Air-dry overnight and then bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 45 minutes depending on your project's size.
  • When hard, use black paint and the thin line brush to paint on the face.  Use a sharpened pencil if you wish, to carefully mark where you will be painting the lines for the features.
  • An optional halo can be made from a tie wrap.  Make a circle at one end of the wire and then twist the remainder of the wire downward.  Glue lower end of the halo to the back end of the head.
  • As an option, you can paint the angel's gown with blue glitter acrylic paint after the varnish has dried.

Dough Art Angel Project Top View:

Use this photo as a guide for layering the strands of hair that you cut from the clay extrusion tool or your garlic press.   Whatever excess dough you have after placing the strands over the top of the head, you can cut off carefully with an Exacto or paring knife.  Be sure to leave a little amount to cover the total surface of the head and to lay over the wings slightly.  You may need to practice a few times if you've never done this before, but you'll find this easy to do after a few times.  With dough art nothing needs to be perfect.  That's it's charm!
