 Dough Art General Instructions

Have fun making this dough art stocking hanger.  It's an easy project you can make with children or anyone inexperienced with dough art sculpting.  There are many variations to this project that are fun and easy, yet beautiful for hanging your family stocking on the mantel or as an ornament on your Christmas tree.

If you landed on this page and you are new to this craft, read our Dough art Instructions to help you get started.   For more wreath ideas go to the Wreath Patterns and Illustrations for ideas. Go here for our safety instructions.   For our recipe and supply list of items you can use from your home to design and sculpt, see below.

Have fun making this project that can be handed down from one generation to another.  Use your own style of decorating if you desire.

Wreath Stocking Holder

Materials Needed:

  1. Salt dough
  2. Acrylic colors green for the wreath or gold, red for the candle, and yellow for the candle glow
  3. General tools and supplies
  4. Cup and ornament hangers
  5. 1 yd. any color 1/4" wide ribbon and 1 yd. any color 1/2" wide ribbon
  6. Gloss or matte varnish

Instructions:

1.  Make two smooth rolls of medium green dough your desired length.  An 8" or 9" cable, approximately 1" thick will make a strong  stocking holder.  So each rope will be about 1/2" thick.

2.  Place the ropes side-by-side and gently twist each roll around the other to form a cable (see illustration).  Fuse the ends together to form a circle shape and smooth.  Make sure that the fused ends are at the bottom center of the cable.

3.  Use the candle pattern to shape the candle with your hand. Smooth the top of the dough if necessary.  Fuse to the bottom of the wreath.

4.  Use uncolored dough for the candle glow.  Flatten a small ball of dough and flatten to the size of the pattern.  Make as thin as possible and then fuse to the top of the candle, resting on the wax paper.

5.  Use a tiny piece of light yellow dough to make the flame.  Roll a tiny ball and pinch with your thumb and index finger to create the point and flame shape.  Fuse to the top of the candle, resting it on top of the flame.

6.  Insert the ornament hanger into the top center area of the wreath and the cup holder into the bottom center.

7.  Remove project from the wax paper, place on tin foil and bake at 350 degrees for about thirty minutes.  See our safety instructions.

When your dough art stocking hanger is completely hard, varnish, let dry and then decorate as you desire. Our example has a 1/4" ribbon evenly wrapped around the cables with the ends glued in place and a 1/2" bow glued to bottom center.

Dough Art Stocking Hanger Pattern

candle wreath Twist Two Ropes Of Dough Together

Use Pattern As a Guide

Use the pattern for sizing. Make smaller for a tree ornament.

You can also use a circle cut-out shape for the wreath.  Cut 1/4" wide for best results.  Smooth the edges if needed.

The bow can be made from dough instead of ribbon by using the pattern to shape. Press a needle into center area to create the folds, then fuse a ball of dough over center and gently press to flatten.

Twist two ropes of dough together and join for the cable wreath.

Candy Cane

Use any left over dough to make a candy cane.  Make the size you need and then bend the top portion of the dough as shown.

Use a bow to decorate and add an ornament hanger when the dough is soft to decorate your tree.

This project can be made into lollipops, cookies and Christmas candy in the sizes you need.  Add a bow, cookies decorations and glitter to decorate.

Pinwheel Lollipop

Make two ropes of dough and place one on top the other.  Do not twist, but roll into a circle shap with on rope on top the other.  Leave as is to make a cookie or insert a plastic dowel into the bottom center and let project air-dry.

DO NOT PUT INTO THE OVEN WITH THE PLASTIC DOWEL.
